Field Trips

White Water Rafting

Lower Youghiogheny River with Mountain Streams and Trails. This is a special fundraising trip offered by one of the Conservancy’s lifetime members. The McCartys have offered to provide this trip at a special low rate of $40/person including lunch. They have also generously agreed to donate half of this rate back to the Conservancy as a fundraiser. This is a guided trip on Class 3 whitewater through some of the most beautiful scenery around. Synthetic clothes should be worn, no cotton, wetsuits available. This trip will leave promptly at 9 am from the WVU, Westvaco Natural Resources Center. Note:The upper yough trip mentioned in the Voice will not be run due to low water conditions.

Rock Climbing

Beginners can try out this age-old sport gaining new popularity. Join Adam Polinski and members of the Coopers Rock Foundation to give this challenging sport a try. Meet at 9 AM at the WVU, Westvaco Natural Resources Center.

Bike

Rail-Trail Bike Rides Tour Morgantown’s new rail trail with Mike Breiding and members of the Mon River Trails Conservancy. The trail follows scenic Deckers Creek through the woodlands along the former M&K line. Fat tired bikes recommended. 2 – 1/2 day trips are planned.
9am-meet at the Westvaco Natural Resources Center.
1pm- meet at the Krogers in Sabraton.

Coopers Rock Mountainbiking For more serious mountainbiking, Coopers Rock State Forest provides a wide variety of trails, from old RR grades, to gnarley single track. Maps and recommendations will be available.

Hike

Virgin Hemlock Hiking Trail Visit this popular site in Coopers Rock State Forest. A scenic walk through a remnant stand of old-growth hemlocks and old hardwood forest. This is an easy walk, close by, beginning at 9AM and lasting a couple hours, meet at the WVU, Westvaco Natural Resources Center.

Coopers Rock History, with Ken Carvell This walk begins at 1pm at the WVU, Westvaco Natural Resources Center. Walk with West Virginia’s greatest naturalist and historian to an old homestead on the State Forest. Learn flora, fauna and the colorful rich history of Coopers Rock and the State Forest. If you have never been on an outing with Dr. Carvell, you shouldn’t miss this opportunity.

Cheat Lake Trail Hike this beautiful lakeside trail with local activist and veterinarian Deb Fulton. This 4.5 mile trail is being developed by Allegheny Power as part of their hydropower project at the lake. It became mired in controversy when adjacent landowners unsuccessfully tried to prevent the trail from being constructed. This hike will meet at 1pm, at the WVU, Westvaco Natural Resources Center.

Laurel Run Trout Stream project Join Larry Harris and members of the P. Pendleton Kennedy chapter of Trout Unlimited for a walk along one of the areas finest trout streams. Learn about their efforts at stream restoration/improvements and trail construction. This hike will meet at the WVU, Westvaco Natural Resources Center at 1pm.

Boat

Cheat Lake Take a scenic tour of Cheat Lake aboard a pontoon boat with Pat Johns. You’ll tour the entire lake from the dam to the headwaters in Cheat Canyon. This trip begins at 1pm, and will meet at the WVU, Westvaco Natural Resources Center.

Tour

Acid Mine drainage reclamation sites in the area. Join Richard diPretoro on a driving and walking tour of sites such as the Omega Mine, Martinka, TNT, and the Fairmont Pool. Meet at the WVU, Westvaco Natural ResourcesCenter at 9 AM for this tour.
