The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, West Virginia’s oldest and largest environmental organization, offers programs on environmental issues to schools, colleges, universities, churches and other organizations.
Currently we have:
_ "Property Rights? or Property Responsibilities?" An overview of the past, present and future of Blackwater Canyon and other significant lands in West Virginia. The presenter, Chuck Merritt, has a long history with Blackwater Canyon recreation, culture and history and worked on the railroad that ran through the Canyon. Mr. Merritt is an advocate for endangered species and old growth forest. He has also works for a sensitive and sensible alternative to four-lane highways (such as the proposed Corridor H) through the mountains of West Virginia.
_ A slide program, video and discussion on the Blackwater Canyon. The presenters are Julian Martin and Mae Ellen Wildt. Mr. Martin is volunteer coordinator for the Campaign to Save Blackwater Canyon, a recently retired science teacher, a former Chemical Engineer, Peace Corps volunteer and foreign student advisor at WVU. Ms. Wildt is a retired senior vice-president of United National Bank and a former board member and treasurer of the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council.
_ Larry Gibson, who is featured in the ABC video aired on national television, is our speaker on mountain top removal. Mr. Gibson founded the Stanley Heir’s Foundation to save the family mountain. We also have videos to loan from ABC, BBC and Australian TV on mountain top removal.
_ Other programs and speakers on the many environmental interests of the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy may be arranged.
