How About A Mon-Athon 2000 Outing in Your Monongahela National Forest!

"Mon-Athon 2000" is a West Virginia Highlands Conservancy (WVHC) project to celebrate and enjoy our wonder-full Monongahela National Forest. Mon-Athon 2000 is open to everyone -- this means you! Mon-Athon 2000 includes all types of outdoor recreational activities -- like hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, birding, hunting, boating, skiing, etc. -- in and adjoining the Mon National Forest proclamation boundary (marked as a green area on any state road map).

Join in a Mon-Athon 2000 public outing in the Mon, and/or report on your own private or group outdoor recreation activity. When you submit an outing activity report form, we will send you a FREE MON-ATHON 2000 T-SHIRT! And all activity participants whose names you send us will be entered in drawings during 2000 (July 15, October 15, and December 15) -- for FABULOUS OUTDOOR RECREATION PRIZES! You can fill out and submit an activity report form at the WVHC Web site -- http://www.wvhighlands.org -- or we’ll mail you forms. Send pictures of your outing activity and get a FREE Hiking Guide to the Mon. Want to list/lead an outing activity in the Mon in 2000? Great! Let us know, and we’ll list it in the WVHC’s outstanding monthly newspaper, The Highlands Voice -- with you as the leader/contact person.

For current outing schedules (new ones added regularly as year 2000 progresses), see above Web site; or, for current schedules, to get activity report forms, to list an outing, etc., contact: Tom Rodd, c/o West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, PO Box 306, Charleston, WV, 25321. Not a Soul Around

A Mon-Athon 2000 Activity Report Excerpt

from Scott Reilly, Morgantown WV

"February 23, 2000. One-day hiking and birding trip to Otter Creek Wilderness, Tucker County, Forest Service Trails 131 and 130, Cheat Ranger District.

Started early in the morning, with not a soul around. The high volume of water flowing out of Otter Creek into the Dry Fork was our best company! The sun shone the entire day, causing a slight sweat to break out -- a welcome change ffrom the constant shivering of winter . . . hiked up Green Mt. Trail to and incredible overlook that showed nearly the whole Otter Creek drainage. Magnificent hardwoods, bare grey and waiting for spring! Trails were accurately described [in the Guidebook] and gave us plenty of warning about upcoming conditions."

Scott Reilly gets a free Mon-Athon 2000 T-Shirt for sending in his activity report. And all of his activity participants are entered in the drawings for fabulous prizes! Make your activity report, too -- try the Web at http://www.wvhighlands.org. It's easy!
