Dry Fork Clean Up
By Rod Newton
On Sunday, April 29, 2001, twenty-five volunteers showed up at the Otter Creek Trail Head with an attitude for picking up trash. The weather was stellar and the garbage was plentiful, a good formula for a great solution. So these folks took to the riverbanks and roadsides and went to town. Some focused on the campsites along the river road while another group remedied two dumpsites along Rt. 72. With their enthusiasm and strength, they managed to remove 2.75 tons of trash.
Many folks found treasures that did not make it to the back of the truck, though most of it did. Here is a list of the articles removed: 7 bedsprings/mattresses, 44 tires, 60 bags of trash, 4 TV’s, 3 hot water heaters, 3 stoves, 2 typewriters, 2 sinks, 2 refrigerators, 1 car door, 1 couch, 1 bicycle, 1 microwave, and 1 stuffed Easter Bunny (3 ft tall).
Thanks and appreciation goes to the following: WV Department of Environmental Protection for providing gloves, bags, and tipping fees; The WV Department of Natural Resources/Make It Shine Program for promotional materials; WV Department of Highways for the transportation and hauling of the trash; The Davis Boys Center, Tucker County Residents, AmeriCorps, The Commission for National and Community Service, and The Alldredge Academy. A job well done folks!!!!
