The Cost of Doing Business

(From "Corporate Focus" by Mokhiber & Weissman)

In spite of an administration in Washington that has been most lax in the enforcement of environmental laws;
In spite of the larger corporations often having powerful friends in government;
In spite of many corporations not making this list because of just not getting caught;
In spite of those caught being able to pull strings sufficiently to get the charges dropped;
In spite of those charged having teams of high priced lawyers to find loopholes to get them off the hook:

In spite of all this -- The following corporations were found guilty of environmental crimes in the decade of the 90's and were required to pay the listed fines.

In nearly all cases the fines were a token amount compared to the environmental damages inflicted. Some corporations were recidivists as noted. Corporations fined less than $200,000 not included.
