The Mountain Institute (TMI) is a nonprofit conservation and educational organization committed to the preservation of mountain environments and advancement of mountain cultures throughout the world.

Since 1972, conservation, development, and education programs have been administered on three continents from the Institute’s base in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. The Institute’s three range-based divisions include the (1) Appalachian (conservation education, training, bio-diversity protection), (2) Himalayan (supporting the Makalu-Barun National Park in Nepal and Qomolangma Nature Preserve in Tibet), and (3)the Andean programs (supporting integrated conservation and development in the Huascaran National Park Conservation Project, Peru).

TMI’s 400-acre Spruce Knob Mountain Center (SKMC) in Pendleton County, WV, promotes conservation education, mountain research, field demonstrations, partnerships, and national/international workshops, including: high school teacher training programs in the environmental sciences, the West Virginia Scholars Academy for High School Seniors, Mountain Learning School Course and Summer Adventure programs, and Community-based conservation and restoration initiatives.
