Working Conditions: Remote, with occasional in-person meetings or events in West Virginia
Remuneration: $18,000 - $22,000
Reports to: Program Director
Teams with: Membership and Operations Director
About the Role:
The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy (WVHC) is seeking a dynamic, creative, and environmentally committed individual to join our team as a part-time Communications Coordinator. In this role, you will help amplify our advocacy efforts, create impactful narratives, and ensure that our mission to protect the Highlands region resonates with a broad and diverse audience. Your work will be instrumental in shaping public perception, building community engagement, and raising awareness of our conservation efforts across West Virginia.

Content Creation and Management:
- Manage and produce content for The Highlands Voice, our monthly newsletter, including copy editing, layout, soliciting contributions, and distributing both print and digital formats.
- Develop, curate, and edit engaging content for our website, social media, and other digital channels, keeping messaging consistent with WVHC’s mission and goals.
- Write press releases, blog posts, newsletters, and advocacy updates that capture attention and build support for WVHC’s initiatives.
- Ensure all communications are aligned with branding guidelines and maintain high standards of quality, creativity, and clarity.
Stakeholder Engagement and Outreach:
- Maintain and grow relationships with media contacts, assisting with press outreach to promote WVHC’s initiatives and events.
Print and Fundraising Support:
- Assist with the development and production of print campaigns, including brochures, fundraising materials, one-pagers, and other collateral for advocacy and outreach.
- Support fundraising appeals by crafting compelling narratives that resonate with donors and potential supporters.
Strategic Communications Planning:
- Assist in the development and implementation of WVHC’s annual communications plan, in line with our broader advocacy and conservation strategies.
Professional Development:
- Stay informed of trends and innovations in environmental communications, digital media, and marketing to continuously improve WVHC’s outreach efforts.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated experience with graphic design and best practices.
- Familiarity with Associated Press (AP) Style and excellent attention to detail.
- Proficiency in InDesign Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Premiere Pro (or other similar video editing software); working understanding of, or ability to learn, cloud-based applications and tools such WordPress, Canva, and Slack.
- Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
- Basic photography and videography skills.
- Ability to track and analyze performance metrics, offering recommendations for improvement.
- Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in media, marketing and communications.
- High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
- Self-starter, able to work independently; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
- Passion for environmental conservation and a strong understanding of key environmental issues in West Virginia would be a plus.
- Must be a resident of West Virginia.
