The remote forested slopes below Roaring Plains down into Long Run Canyon, as seen from Haystack Knob in October 2002.
Beneath the forest canopy there are large rock outcrops that must be circumvented if you want to keep going up or down the slope. If you look carefully, on the far right hand side, one of these cliffs is visible. The slope is south facing so the trees have grown tall. The understory is minimal and there is a wonderful open cathedral effect. This north slope of the Long Run Canyon is perhaps the most remote place in the Plains area.
