Remaining boulder fields on Roaring Plains as seen from across Long Run Canyon from Haystack Knob. In the late 1920's, the entire plateau was barren and rocky like those fields are, still to this day. Photo taken July 2002. Notice that the top of the mountain is in spruce forest but the lower slopes are mostly deciduous. Historically, the spruce forests almost certainly extended down the slopes below this frame. Note that the isolated rock outcrop in the bottom of the photo is above 4100' in elevation and offers an oustanding view of Long Run Canyon.
