Conference on Ecology and Management of High-Elevation Forests of the Central and Southern Appalachian Mountains

The Conference will bring together managers, practitioners, and researchers to provide a comprehensive examination of the sta te of our knowledge about high?e levation fo rests of the central and southern Appalachian Mountains. It will be jo in tly hosted by West Virgin ia University D ivision of Forestry and Natural Resources, USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station, USDA Forest Service, Monongahe la National Forest, US Fish and W ildlife Service, and The Nature Conservancy. It is also co?sponsored by the West V irginia H ighlands Conservancy which is providing student scholarships.
Topics addressed in the Conference include Soils , Acid Deposition, Nutrient Cycling, Ecological Classification, Forest Dynamics, B irds, Wild life , Fisheries, Forest Pests, Clim ate Change, Regeneration & Restoration.
Registration: The registration fee is $125. After April 15 the la te registration fee is $150. This will cover handouts, breakfast, breaks and lunches on Thursday and Friday, and transportation fo r fieldtrips.
Conference Schedule: The conference will begin Wednesday night (M ay 13) w ith a reception (cash bar) at Snowshoe. Thursday’s agenda will include plenary speakers in the morning, and breakout sessions in the afternoon. Oral presentations/breakout sessions will continue Friday morning, and field trips will be offered Friday afternoon. Plenary Speakers: Charles Cogbill (H arvard Forest) will speak on the biogeography of high?e levation fo rests of the region, Carolyn Copenheaver (Va. Tech) on the history of the resource, Greg Nowacki (U SDA Forest Service) on the current status of the resource, and Mark Anderson (TNC) on the resource under a clim ate change scenario.
